Court Revokes Law That Led to Sanusi’s Reinstatement as Emir of Kano

FG to Sanusi: We Don’t Need Your Approval for Our Economic Reforms

On Thursday, June 20, 2024, the Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice A. M. Liman, set aside the actions taken by the Kano State government under a newly enacted law. This law repealed a 2019 statute that led to the removal of Aminu Ado Bayero and the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.

On May 23, Sanusi made a dramatic comeback to the throne following a new law, titled the Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment No. 2) Law, 2024, which scrapped the five emirates. With the law, Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano, was removed.

While the court declined to nullify the Kano Emirate Council Law, it invalidated the actions taken by the state government in accordance with the law.

Justice Liman noted that the defendants were aware of the interim order issued by the court but chose to disregard it and proceeded with the implementation of the law.
