Court remands Ejimakor, Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, in Kuje prison over Abuja protest
A magistrate court in Kuje has ordered the remand of Aloy Ejimakor, a lawyer representing Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following his arrest during a protest calling for Kanu’s release.
Ejimakor was arrested on Monday in Abuja by the police after joining demonstrators demanding the release of the IPOB leader, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in 2021.
Alongside Ejimakor, 12 other individuals were charged with various offences, including criminal conspiracy, disobedience to lawful orders, inciting disturbance, and disrupting public peace, in contravention of sections 152, 114, and 113 of the Penal Code Law.
The 13 defendants, named in two separate first information reports (FIRs), include Emmanuel Kanu, Joshua Emmanuel, Wilson Anyalewechi, Okere Kingdom Nnamdi, Clinton Chimeneze, Gabriel Joshua, Isiaka Husseini, Onyekachi Ferdinand, Amadi Prince, Edison Ojisom, Godwill Obioma, and Chima Onuchukwu.
According to police reports, the arrests occurred at multiple locations within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as the defendants allegedly engaged in activities that disrupted public peace.
One FIR stated that on October 20, 2025, Ejimakor and 11 others were arrested while “inciting disturbance and breach of public peace in disobedience to a court order, denying other citizens freedom of movement, disrupting traffic, and chanting war songs calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who is undergoing lawful trial at the Federal High Court, in a manner that threatens national security.”
The second FIR noted that Chima Onuchukwu was arrested at Gate 8, Aso Villa, while carrying a placard reading “Free Nnamdi Kanu” and allegedly inciting public disturbance.
The defendants appeared before the Kuje Magistrate Court, but their arraignment was postponed after they requested additional time to consult with their lawyers. The magistrate subsequently ordered that all 13 defendants be remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre and adjourned the case to October 24 for arraignment.
In a post on X, Ejimakor confirmed his status, writing: “I am safe & sound but still under custody at Kuje prison. The magistrate refused to listen to our submissions.”
