JUST IN: High Court Dismisses Motion To Gag #EndBadGovernance Protesters
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed a motion seeking an interim injunction order prohibiting protesters in Nigeria from continuing the current protests tagged #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria.
The ex parte motion, marked FHC/ABS/CS/1149/2024, on Monday, August 12, 2024, was dismissed by Justice Peter Lifu.
The motion was filed by certain Nigerians against different platforms galvanizing protesters in the country.
Organizations like Timely Intervention, Nigerians Against Hunger, Initiative For Change, Human Rights Co-advocacy Initiative, Nigerian Against Corruption Initiative, Citizens For Change Advocacy Initiative, Take It Back Movement and Concerned Nigerians were all respondents in the suit.
Other Respondents include Students For Change, Active Citizens Group, We Coalition, Total Intervention, Refurbished Nigeria, Save Nigeria Movement, Tomorrow Today, Our Future In Our Hands Initiative, Youths Against Tyranny, Omoyele Sowore, and Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The Attorney General Of The Federation (AGF) and security agencies are also respondents in the case.
The Applicants’ lawyer, Tsembelee Sorkaa, argued that the economic survival and fundamental human rights of his clients are being threatened by the ongoing protests.
In the court’s judgment, however, the Justice noted that the ex parte notice did not contain the required affidavit to support its requests for an interim injunction and substituted service.
On these grounds, the High Court dismissed the motion.
