Court Blocks Senate Disciplinary Action Against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan
The federal high court in Abuja has issued a restraining order preventing the senate committee on ethics, privileges, and public petitions from proceeding with disciplinary actions against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Presiding Judge Obiora Egwuatu granted the order on Tuesday, following an ex parte application submitted by the senator’s legal representatives. The ruling comes in the wake of a controversial incident that occurred during a senate plenary session on February 20.
The disciplinary proceedings were initiated after Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi central, disrupted a senate session by refusing her assigned seat and repeatedly challenging the authority of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Her actions led to the senate referring her to the ethics committee for a formal review.
Complicating the matter, Akpoti-Uduaghan made serious allegations during a February 28 interview on Arise TV, claiming that her difficulties within the senate stemmed from rejecting alleged sexual advances from the senate president.
The court’s intervention effectively suspends the senate committee’s planned disciplinary proceedings, marking a significant moment in the ongoing dispute between the senator and senate leadership.
