Just days after inking a record £15 million deal with Cardiff City, footballer Emiliano Sala has been declared missing.
Sala had completed a club-record move and had returned to Nantes, his former club, to bid farewell to his old teammates. He was flying in a Cardiff-bound Piper Malibu light aircraft on Monday night when the plane disappeared from radar in the English Channel.
Club authorities say they were still awaiting confirmation before they can give further comments on the Argentine’s striker’s whereabouts. He was due to report for training in Cardiff on Tuesday.
“We are very concerned for the safety of Emiliano Sala,” Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman said.
His desperate family also told Argentine channel C5N that the last time he communicated with them was on Sunday.
“Still nobody from Nantes has communicated with us, we are worried, desperate, this took us all by surprise,” his father Horacio said.
“I don’t have any information on the journey, the only thing I know is that it was a small plane.
“They are saying that the plane lost control in the channel. I don’t know what could have happened. I am speechless.”
Search is still ongoing to unravel the footballer’s whereabouts.
