Canada’s Liberal Party Leader, Trudeau, Resigns Due to Mounting Political Pressure

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces his resignation

Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, says he is resigning from his position as the Leader of the country’s Liberal Party.

The Prime Minister made this announcement on Monday while addressing those gathered before his residence at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa.

Trudeau says his resignation as Prime Minister will be finalized once a new leader emerges.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide, competitive process. Last night, I asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin that process,” Trudeau said.

Trudeau pointed out that the country’s upcoming federal elections must be held before October 20, 2025.

“This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister has been in office for the last 9years.

A spate of no-confidence votes has plagued his government in recent times with calls for his sack growing everyday.

Recall that ex-Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigned from office last December.

This follows their disagreement over a suitable response to the threat made by United States President-elect, Donald Trump, regarding slapping a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods.

MPs of the governing Liberal Party are split between backing the PM and calling for his resignation.

“Chrystia has been by my side for close to 10 years now. She has been an incredible political partner through just about everything we have done as a government,” he said.

“I had really hoped that she would agree to continue as my deputy prime minister and take on one of the most important files that not just this government but this country is facing. But she chose otherwise,” Trudeau said regarding Freeland’s resignation.

Observers wonder how the party will cope with a replacement so soon to the coming polls.

Already, Conservative’s Pierre Poilievre leads in public opinion polls by some 20points.
