Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah and several soldiers killed in Borno terrorist attack
A senior Nigerian army officer and several soldiers were killed during an attempted attack on a military base in the country’s northeast early Thursday, officials said.
The incident occurred in Benisheikh, in Borno State, a region long affected by insurgent violence. According to the military, the attackers—described as terrorists, a term used for Islamist militant groups operating in the area—launched an assault on the base but were ultimately repelled.
Army spokesperson Michael Onoja confirmed that the clash resulted in casualties among government troops, although he did not specify the number of soldiers killed.
President Bola Tinubu also confirmed the death of Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah, expressing condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and honoring their sacrifice.
“The insurgents’ counterattack is a sign of desperation,” Tinubu said, adding that the government remains committed to defeating terrorism and restoring stability across the country.
Nigeria continues to face a complex security crisis, particularly in the northeast, where a decade-long insurgency and widespread kidnappings have posed ongoing challenges despite military efforts to curb the violence.
