David Cameron’s reign as the Prime Minister will end sooner than expected as he has announced he would quit on Wednesday.
Cameron, on Monday, said he would submit his resignation to the Queen on Wednesday after having presided over his last cabinet meeting, the BBC reports.
The prime minister had on June 24, shortly after the UK voted to exit the European Union, announced that he would be making way for a new leader to preside over the exit.
David Cameron has been Prime Minister since 2010.
Mrs Theresa May, the home secretary, is expected to succeed Cameron after her only rival, Andrea Leadsom, pulled out early Monday.
Speaking briefly with journalist on Monday, Cameron said he was delighted May would be taking over from him adding that a “prolonged period of transition” was not necessary.
“So tomorrow I will chair my last cabinet meeting. On Wednesday I will attend the House of Commons for Prime Minister’s Questions.
“After that I expect to go the Palace and offer my resignation.”
The prime minister praised Mrs May as “strong” and “competent” and he said she was “more than able to provide the leadership” the UK needs in the coming year.
“She will have my full support,” he added..
