BREAKING: Supreme Court Sacks Julius Abure as Labour Party Chairman

In a landmark ruling that could reshape the Labour Party’s leadership structure, the Supreme Court on Friday removed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the party.

Delivering a unanimous judgment, a five-member panel of justices overturned a previous decision by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had earlier upheld Abure’s position as party chairman.

The apex court ruled that the Court of Appeal had overstepped its bounds, stating it lacked the jurisdiction to decide on matters about internal party leadership. According to the Supreme Court, such issues fall squarely within the domain of the political party itself and are not subject to judicial intervention.

In its verdict, the court also found merit in the appeal brought by Senator Esther Usman and another party stakeholder, allowing their case and effectively ending Abure’s reign. The court further noted that evidence before it indicated that Abure’s tenure had already lapsed.

As a result, the court dismissed a cross-appeal filed by Abure’s faction of the Labour Party, ending his legal efforts to retain his chairmanship.

This ruling is expected to spark fresh internal realignments within the Labour Party, as stakeholders scramble to reposition themselves ahead of future elections.
