Brazilian President Lula in ICU Following Emergency Brain Surgery
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is recovering in the intensive care unit after undergoing successful brain surgery in Sao Paulo. The 79-year-old leader had the procedure to drain a bleed in his brain, reportedly linked to a fall he suffered at home in late October.
A government statement released on Tuesday confirmed that Lula’s condition is stable and that he is being closely monitored in the ICU. Doctors are expected to provide further updates in a press briefing scheduled for 9 a.m. local time.
The health issue came to light after the president experienced headaches on Monday, prompting an MRI in Brasilia. The scan revealed an intracranial hemorrhage, and he was immediately flown to the Sirio Libanes Hospital in Sao Paulo for the procedure.
The injury stems from a fall in October, where Lula sustained trauma to the back of his head, requiring stitches. Though initial tests in November showed no worsening of his condition, the new symptoms necessitated urgent action.
As a result of the health scare, Lula canceled his plans to attend a BRICS summit in Russia, adhering to medical advice to avoid long-haul travel.
