Bolt Offers Support to Assaulted Driver, Silent on Possible Legal Action

Ride-hailing company Bolt has confirmed that they have reached out to Stephen Abuwatseya to offer assistance and support following his assault and threats against his life by Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives.

“We’re deeply troubled by this occurrence and take matters of this nature very seriously. The safety and well-being of both drivers and passengers are of utmost importance to us,” Bolt told Neusroom in an email conversation.

Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, recorded a video showing Ikwechegh—House of Representatives member for Aba North and South Federal Constituency—physically assaulting him and threatening his life. The incident occurred after Abuwatseya delivered a package to Ikwechegh’s residence in Abuja.

The incident sparked an outcry after Abuwatseya posted the videos on social media, with many Nigerians calling for legal action against Ikwechegh and his suspension from the lower chamber.

While Neusroom specifically asked Bolt if they would take legal action against the House of Representatives member, the e-hailing company declined to comment on this but confirmed that they are in contact with the driver.

“Our General Manager, Osi Oguah, has reached out to the driver to express our support and convey our dedication to assist the driver in addressing the incident appropriately. Our safety team is also working with the driver to provide appropriate compensation and comfort,” the statement sent to Neusroom reads in part.

Update on the Alex Ikwechegh’s Assault on Stephen Abuwatseya

On Tuesday, during the plenary session at the House of Representatives, Ikwechegh tendered an apology to Abuwatseya and Nigerians for what he described as unacceptable behavior.

“I, Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, Member of the House of Representatives, wish to address a deeply disturbing incident that occurred at my residence recently. A video has surfaced showing me engaging in unacceptable behavior towards an Uber driver who came to deliver a waybill for me. I am deeply sorry for my actions and acknowledge that they were unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official,” he said.

After his apology, a Point of Privilege was raised by House Leader Rep. Julius Ihonvbere (APC, Edo), urging the chamber to act swiftly to uphold the institution’s credibility. The matter was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges for review.
