Atiku, Obi, David Mark, Amaechi lead ADC protest to INEC HQ
A coalition of prominent Nigerian political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, David Mark, and Rotimi Amaechi, on Wednesday led a protest to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.
The demonstration, tagged “Occupy INEC,” was organised by leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in response to what they described as bias and partisanship by the electoral body.
Other notable participants included Rauf Aregbesola, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Dino Melaye, all of whom joined the protest in solidarity.
In a statement shared on X, Atiku Abubakar said the protest was a peaceful effort to defend Nigeria’s democratic system. He stressed that the action was driven by concerns over the integrity of the electoral process and the need to prevent any drift toward authoritarianism.
At the protest venue, demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Ojoro” while displaying placards bearing messages like “Tinubu, why are you afraid?”, “Judges must give justice,” and “Let democracy breathe.”
The protest follows a recent decision by INEC to withdraw recognition of the ADC leadership, a move reportedly linked to a ruling by the Court of Appeal. The development has further heightened tensions among opposition figures, who argue that the independence of the electoral commission must be preserved to ensure credible elections.
