Atiku: Ibadan Funfair Tragedy Breaks My Heart

'Embrace Gratitude Despite Hardship’ - Atiku Urges Nigerians at Christmas

The serene city of Ibadan was thrown into mourning on Wednesday, December 18, following a tragic stampede at a children’s funfair event in the Bashorun area, claiming the lives of at least 40 minors. The heartbreaking incident occurred at the Islamic High School, leaving the nation in shock.

The event, organized by Naomi Silekunola, an ex-wife of Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, turned disastrous as an unexpectedly massive crowd overwhelmed the venue. Although the organisers anticipated 5,000 attendees, the turnout far exceeded expectations, resulting in chaos and a devastating stampede. The Oyo State Police Command reported that six additional individuals sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. Authorities have taken Silekunola into custody for further investigation.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar joined millions of Nigerians in grieving the loss. In a statement released on Thursday, December 19, Abubakar expressed his anguish over the tragedy, highlighting the profound sorrow faced by the affected families.
