Anambra community bans open defecation, stamps N5,000 fine for defaulters

The chairman of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committee in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra state, Godwin Uche has announced an outright ban on open defecation in the community.

He made the statement at the launch of the WASHCOM Federation on Tuesday, adding that defaulters will be charged a fine of N5,000.

“We move round to make sure that uncompleted buildings have toilet facilities; otherwise, we’ll eject the persons living there. If you are caught defecating in the open in my community, you are fined N5,000. No going back,” he said.

The initiative was adopted to discourage open defecation in the state as Nigeria has been ranked one of the countries with the highest prevalence of open defecation in the world.

Uche further said that efforts to achieve open defecation-free status has been severally frustrated due to an influx of rural to urban dwellers who occupy uncompleted buildings that have no toilets.

“We have so many illiterates in the community who hardly understand what we are saying. Eradicating it has not been easy, though it is reducing gradually,” Uche said.

There’s no saying whether imposing a fine of N5,000 will deter the defaulters who, according to reports are poor people who move from villages to the urban area in search of greener pastures.
