Ali Bongo Gains Freedom After Nearly Two Years in Detention

Ali Bongo, who was ousted as President of Gabon by a military coup led by Oligui Nguema in August 2023, has been released from house arrest and is now in Angola.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Gabonese presidency on Facebook.

“Following the efforts made by the President of the Republic of Angola and the Acting Chairperson of the African Union, João Lourenço, together with President Brice Oligui Nguema of Gabon, the Bongo family has been released and has just arrived in Luanda,” the statement said.

Before he was ousted, Ali Bongo—whose father, Omar Bongo, ruled Gabon for more than four decades—led the country for 14 years.
