After escaping Enugu hospital “hostage”, conjoined Nigerian twins arrive US for surgery
Miracle and Testimony Ayeni have landed the US to undergo a surgery that would give them a better shot at life.
The twins have been joined together since birth.
The girls were delivered at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, on November 16, 2015.
Despite the inability of the hospital to perform the surgery that would separate the babies, it allegedly frustrated plans to get them help elsewhere by refusing to share the babies’ medical information with other hospitals to which they were taken.
UNTH held the babies hostage, sort of.
It was not until Mrs Mary Abiodun Ayeni, the twins’ mother cried out on social media that UNTH did the needful.
Non-governmental organisation Linking Hands Foundation was later able to secure free medical treatment for the twins at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, USA.
Arik Air took care of the family’s return tickets.
Miracle and Testimony landed in the US about a week ago ready for the surgery that could take up to 18 hours to complete.
Doctors say the Ayeni conjoined twins have a 5-25 per cent chance of surviving the operation.
Mr Samuel Olusegun Ayeni and his wife said they want both girls to live.
