A Brief About Ogunlesi
Ogunlesi’s academic qualifications span across various fields. The 71-year-old holds a B.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from Oxford University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
However, it is his expertise in corporate finance, infrastructure investment, and global market strategy that has earned him global recognition.
Before co-founding Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) in 2006, Ogunlesi worked for 23 years at Credit Suisse, where he rose to Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Client Officer of its Investment Banking Division.
In January 2024, BlackRock Inc., the world’s largest asset manager with $9.42 trillion in assets, agreed to acquire GIP for $12.5 billion. This deal placed Ogunlesi in the global spotlight, underscoring his influence on Wall Street.
As Chief Operating Officer of GIP, Ogunlesi helped the infrastructure investment fund amass $105 billion in assets, pioneering a $1 trillion industry. His strategy for business transformation is best summarized in his words:
“If you can find people who are smarter than you, surround yourself with them and consider your job as a leader to be clearing obstacles out of their way and inspiring them to do the best that they possibly can,” he told the Financial Times in a recent interview.
GIP’s portfolio includes some of the world’s leading infrastructure businesses, such as Sydney Airport, Edinburgh Airport, the Port of Melbourne, and CyrusOne data centers. These companies generate $75 billion in annual combined revenue and employ over 100,000 workers.
Ogunlesi’s appointment to OpenAI’s Board, where their chatbot, ChatGPT, now serves over 300 million users, highlights his strategic brilliance and wealth of experience. It positions him as a key figure in shaping the future of AI.
