ACPN threatens to sue Ezekwesili unless she returns campaign fund
The leadership of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria have threatened to sue their former presidential candidate, Oby Ezekwesili if she does not return all the money that was generated for her campaign.
Ezekwesili who pulled out at the last minute as the party’s flag bearer and offered to work for a coalition with other candidates has been accused of misusing the campaign fund.
The party National Chairman, Alhaji Ganiyu Galadima made the demand for a refund or risk legal action after Ezekwesili said that the leadership of the party was greedy and desperate for money.
He said that political parties work differently from charity organizations or #BringBackOurGirls movement as expenses must be accounted for.
“For somebody who wants to contest for the presidency, all you could generate for period of three months was just N43m and she spent everything. She did not disclose the sources of the fund and how much she generated,” Galadima said.
He further said the party wants to know all the details of the fund raised and the account breakdown so as to balance their books in case INEC raises questions.
“We are expecting that she will respond at the appropriate time but if she doesn’t, we may be compelled to go to court.”
INEC had insisted that it was too late to back down when Oby Ezekwesili announced her withdrawal. Her name is expected to still be on the ballot in the forthcoming election.
