Abia governor’s aide dies in auto crash involving First Lady’s convoy
An accident involving the motorcade of Nkechi Ikpeazu, wife of Abia governor, led to the death of two women on Tuesday.
One woman identified as Promise Uche-Nwamkpa, wife of a former member of the Abia state house of assembly, was one of the victims.
The women were said to be returning from a burial ceremony in Ntigha-Uzor in Obingwa LGA of the state when the accident occurred.
The Hummer vehicle they were travelling in lost control and somersaulted at least three times as the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle.
Mrs. Promise Uche-Nwamkpa was pronounced dead on the spot.
An occupant of the vehicle told newsmen that the driver was on high speed.
“The driver was on high speed and everybody in the vehicle was asking him to slow down. Suddenly the bus started jumping up and down before it started somersaulting,” she said.
The driver, Bright Ugwubujor, blamed the accident on brake failure.
“When I tried to overtake the vehicle, I noticed an oncoming vehicle and attempted to retreat but I encountered a bump on the road and when I tried to apply the brake it could not work,” he said.
“Immediately, the vehicle began to somersault.”
Another woman, Nwamaka Maduchukwu, a senior special assistant on media to Ikpeazu, died while doctors administered treatment at the hospital.
