9mobile Rebrands as T2, Targets Industry Leadership with New Identity

Telecom operator 9mobile has officially rebranded to T2, unveiling a new name and orange corporate colour in a move the company says will position it as a leader in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.

The transformation was announced at the “Tech Meets Tenacity” event held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos. T2’s chief executive officer, Obafemi Banigbe, said the change reflects the company’s renewed ambition.

“This change is necessary for us to give our best. We are not playing catch-up, but to lead in the industry,” Banigbe said.

The launch attracted industry stakeholders, including Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy. Entertainment star Darey Art Alade hosted the event, which featured performances from several music artistes.

From Etisalat to 9mobile to T2

T2’s journey in Nigeria began in 2008, when it entered the market as Etisalat Nigeria under Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Ltd. (EMTS), a year after securing a unified access service licence from the Nigerian Communications Commission.

The company hit a subscriber peak of 22 million between 2014 and 2016. However, the exit of its initial investors triggered financial challenges, reduced infrastructure investment, and a steep decline in its customer base — dropping to 3.2 million by January 2025.

In 2017, the company rebranded from Etisalat Nigeria to 9mobile to project a Nigerian identity.

Banigbe said recent initiatives, including a national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, are part of T2’s strategy to improve service quality and expand coverage as it embarks on this new chapter.
