8 rescued as fully loaded bus plunges into river in Rivers
Rescue operations are still ongoing to recover occupants of a bus that skidded off the road and plunged into a river at Okogbe-Mbiama end of the East-West Road in Rivers state.
About eight persons have been reportedly been rescued from the river since the incident occurred on Tuesday.
The victims were said to be travelling from Portharcourt to Yenagoa.
An eyewitness is quoted by NAN as saying the driver of the fully loaded Hiace bus lost control before driving into the river.
The state police spokesperson, Nnamdi Omoni, said the victims rescued by local divers have been taken to the hospital, while a search for the remaining bodies was still ongoing.
“Eight persons have been rescued, the bus was travelling from Port Harcourt to Yenagoa. The search is still on to know if there are other passengers left in the river,” Omoni said.
