Five Dead, Over 137,000 Evacuated as Los Angeles Faces Worst Wildfire in History

10 Dead, $150 Billion Gone: What We Know About the Los Angeles Fires So Far

Los Angeles and Ventura County are in turmoil as at least five wildfires rage uncontrollably, leaving five dead and forcing over 137,000 residents to flee their homes. Fire officials have described the situation as unprecedented, with one fire in Hollywood Hills expanding rapidly and deemed “zero chance of containment.”

“This is unlike anything we’ve ever faced,” a local fire chief told the BBC.

Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to ashes in what experts are already calling LA’s most destructive wildfire event in history.

High-profile residents, including Paris Hilton, are among those devastated by the destruction. The celebrity shared her heartbreak on social media, saying, “Heartbroken beyond words. Sitting with my family, watching the news, and seeing our home in Malibu burned to the ground on live TV is something no one should ever have to experience.”

Californian fire ecologist Chad Hanson, speaking with the BBC, described the devastation as overwhelming.

“What we have seen are entire neighborhoods wiped out—homes gone, businesses gone. It’s hard to get your mind around,” he said.

Hanson credited first responders with saving countless lives by prioritizing evacuations once it became clear the fires couldn’t be contained. “They did an extraordinary job,” he said, noting the death toll of five could have been far higher.

However, Hanson issued a grim warning about the days ahead. “There is no rain predicted, and with another Santa Ana wind event expected next week, the fires could worsen or new ones may ignite,” he explained.

The crisis has also turned political, with LA Mayor Karen Bass facing criticism for her absence when the fires erupted and for last year’s $17 million budget cut to the fire department.
