11 African migrants drown as rubber boat overturns, 263 others rescued in Libya
At least eleven migrants were confirmed dead on Sunday after drowning as the rubber boat they were travelling in overturned.
The bodies of the victims were recovered by the survivors and hoisted into the boat, AFP reports.
A total of 263 illegal immigrants were rescued about five nautical miles northeast of Sabratha.
Libya’s navy spokesman General Ayoub Kacem told AFP that “in the first operation, 83 illegal migrants were rescued while 180 migrants were rescued from two boats at the second rescue operation which took place off the coast of Zliten in the country’s east.”
The migrants, who are nationalities of different African countries, “were aboard two inflatable boats when they were intercepted and then brought back to the port of Tripoli,” he said.
