Nigeria harbouring more than 30,000 Cameroonian refugees – UN

The tension between armed groups in the north-west and south-west of Cameroon and the government of Paul Biya has created a hostile environment that can no longer accommodate its citizens in the English-speaking region of the country. People in the affected region fleeing for safety have made their way into the neighbouring Cross River state in Nigeria.

The spokesperson of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Babar Baloch has revealed that there are now more than 30,000 Cameroonian refugees in Nigeria.

A new report indicates that many people are being forced out of their homes as the number of victims from the crisis increase daily. Among those affected are mostly women and children who make up to 80 percent of those seeking refuge.

The refugees whose rising needs can no longer be met by donor efforts alone are being sheltered by local communities in the southeastern part of Nigeria. The UNHCR said that they are putting required resources in place to enable them relocate the refugees to more secure locations with better access to essential needs and shelter in Cross River and Benue.

Baloch further stated that “Currently, more than 9,000 Cameroonian refugees have been moved to new settlements, where they receive food as well as essential items such as mattresses, mosquito nets, stoves and cooking utensils, as well as equipment to build shelters.”

Despite the level of work carried out by UNCHR and other aid organizations, the agency says the challenges on ground are numerous, citing lack of access to education opportunities for the refugee children among many other things.

There are ongoing discussions with the Nigerian government to help create more opportunities and resources for the displaced individuals, Baloch points out.
