#JusticeForUwa: No eyewitness has come forward to give us information – Edo Police

While cities in the United States are presently boiling over the killing of George Floyd by a police officer, there is a growing outrage among Nigerians over the death of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 22-year-old 100 Level student of Microbiology at the University of Benin, Edo State.

Neusroom gathered that Uwa was brutally raped by unknown assailants who made their way into the a branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Edo Province 10, Ikpoba Hill, Benin, the state capital, where she was reading.

After raping her, the unknown hoodlums struck her in the head with a fire extinguisher and left her for dead. She reportedly died a few days after she was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital where she had been in a coma.

The Edo State Police Command has, however, said Uwa could not make any comment before her death and no eyewitness has assisted the police with information that could lead to the arrest of the assailants.

The case has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, Nigerians tweeting with the hashtag #JusticeForUwa are calling on the security operatives to fish out the hoodlums who perpetrate the heinous act.

The Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, Chidi Nwabuzor, who confirmed the incident to Neusroom, told our correspondent in a telephone conversation that the Ikpoba police division is presently investigating the case.

He said: “According to the DPO of the Ikpoba Police division, the father of the girl reported a case of assault against unknown hoodlums, before the death of the lady.

“While she (Uwa) was at the hospital she was in a coma and up till her death, she could not give any comment to the police that could aid the investigation.”

The PPRO said no eyewitness has provided the police with information on the incident and the report of the deceased’s father is also based on hearsay.

Nwabuzor added that the police are investigating the matter and no arrest has been made as at the time he spoke with our correspondent.

The Regional Pastor of RCCG in Edo state, Pastor Dele Balogun, refused to comment on the incident. He directed our correspondent to the church authorities in Lagos.

“I can’t speak to you on phone because I don’t know you, if you need any information on the matter, speak to the church authorities in Lagos,” Balogun told Neusroom on phone.

RCCG’s Assistant General Overseer, Admin/Personnel and National Secretary, Pastor Johnson Odesola, is yet to respond to email sent to him on the matter.
